As promised, I had to share my new and improved matcha recipe! This recipe is simple and to the point. My other recipe (that you can find here) has more of a nutty flavor and is a little heavier. This version is my fav but I mean try them both and do you! Also you already know I would love to hear which you prefer!

The Perfect Matcha Latte Recipe

– 1/2 tsp of Matcha Powder

– 1/4 cup HOT water

– 1 cup COLD almond milk

– 1 teaspoon Honey (optional)

– Mason Jar 

Put the cold almond milk in the mason jar and SHAKE! I’m not kidding. This will make your latte sexy & frothy! You can also stick it in the microwave for 15 seconds for even more volume! Wisk the Matcha, hot water and honey together and finish by pouring the frothy almond milk into your matcha “shot”!

Why I Love Matcha A Latte!

Yeah, we are doing puns, get over it.

As if the taste, pun potential, and caffeine weren’t enough to launch an obsession, matcha has some amazing qualities that deserve a mention!

Matcha boosts your mood and promotes calm concentration thanks to an amino acid called L-Theanine that has anti-anxiety effects and allows the caffeine to burn much slower through your system. Basically, you won’t get a caffeine spike and crash like you would from coffee! Maybe its just me… but this sounds like a natural adderal/xanex recipe for your most productive self! 

Matcha is also jam packed with the antioxidant EGCG which is involved in the process of signaling the body to break down fat for energy!  We are talking natural fat burner that doesn’t make you sweat profusely! 

 

While matcha won’t magically shed pounds, it will boost your metabolism and help your body chemically with the process of loosing weight!

Matcha also contains lots of chlorophyll. (I mean duh! Just look at that pretty green!) 

Lately, chlorophyll has been getting a lot of attention as a natural deodorant that works from the inside banishing all kinds of odor from B.O. to bad breath, but, similar to EGCG, it also has some pretty bad ass antioxidant properties of its own! 

Chlorophyll not only promotes healthy skin (YES PLEASE), but also helps your body (esp your liver) detox! Chlorophyll is able to bind to toxic metals and carcinogens and expel them from the body.

One last thing I want to mention is that matcha, unlike coffee is alkaline on your stomach! This is sooo good because overloading on acidic things is a recipe for disaster when it comes to your gut health. PS this also means no yellow staining on your teeth!

I hate to admit it, but productivity is definitely NOT my strong suit… I mean guys, I kid you not I’ve had days where I waste an HOUR looking up the best – get this – Productivity apps… 

just let that sink… Like WHAT??

And am I the only one that has spent actual HOURS online shopping, only to step back, be honest with yourself, and come to the reality that you 1 – don’t need any of it and 2you can’t afford it? So you resolve by closing the entire window and pretending like you didn’t just waste an hour of your life doing absolutely nothing.  It’s a pretty defeating feeling, if we are being real…

I don’t care who you are or what you do for a living, being productive feels fucking fabulous

I have absolutely nothing scientific to back this, but productivity high is  most definitely a thing. Something about crossing things off your To-Do list is just EUPHORIC. In fact sometimes (most of the time, who am I kidding) I write down the most mundane things I can think of just so I can cross them off. How silly right? I mean after that initial oh so satisfactory slash through the thing you were obviously going to do anyway, you come crashing to the realization that, in fact, nothing has been accomplished. UGH. So annoying. 

Habits You Should Have Stopped Yesterday

Stop making 3 mile long ToDo lists in the hope that some of it will get done. – This doesn’t work. You know it doesn’t work. You’ll just overwhelm yourself, jump from task to task and then wonder why nothing got done. 

Stop putting the mundane on your ToDo list. – Including the obvious does not mean you got more done, it means you spent more time making a to do list for no reason & less time getting shit done!

Stop letting the idea of your tasks frustrate you. – Just do them! 

 

Snap out of it. – I 1000% get this isn’t the advice you’re looking for, but sometimes it isn’t about some crazy life hack, its just about you making the conscious decision to snap out of it and get busy!

How to Consistently Reach that Sweet Spot of Focus!

After admitting to her that I just really didn’t feel like I was accomplishing all that I could each day, my friend and amazing mentor Ashley Diana shared some really bad ass advice with me that I have just been itching to pass on! 

 

done is better than perfect.

Is there a way to check the stats on how many people stopped reading after that statement? I get it, I love perfect, too, but “perfect” really just isn’t efficient. No one is asking you to produce crappy sloppy work, just very strongly suggesting that you stop wasting your precious time on the tiniest things that contribute very minimally in the grand scheme of things.

Example – The half an hour I used to spend tweaking my graphics by .00001 mm or the way I used to begin the task of cleaning my room by alphabetically organizing my bookshelf.. Obviously these are extreme examples (have you met me?) but you get the point. JUST GET IT DONE.

The next piece of advice from Ashley was game changing for me. She instructed me to chose three tasks to accomplish everyday, those 3 tasks would be my ToDo list. 

If you are like me you are probably thinking- “THREE THINGS?!? thats it?!” But yes! just 3 things!

This idea comes out of The Productivity Project by Chris Bailey, Which I HIGHLY recommend! Chris talks about how our brain works best in 3’s and emphasizes that by focusing on a short list of three, you allow yourself to really hone in on what is most important to accomplish that day, rather than letting yourself get overwhelmed.

This is far from the only piece of GOLDEN advice included in his book! Literally go check it out, you will not regret it for even a second! 

 

Lastly, My Fav Hack for the Days You Just Can't Even

As much as I can pretend all day long that I’m smashing my goals every single day, the truth is, I don’t. Making the most out of every single day can be tough and improving myself is something that I am CONSTANTLY working on. 

Sometimes days just don’t go as planned… but thats okay! 

Somedays I forget to make my list of three, or I get caught up in something I wasn’t even planning to tackle that day! So, as I work through my day, I make note of the things I HAVE done! Obviously this list isn’t made up of things I need to remember or continue in the future, it simply serves as a little reminder that I should feel good about the things I DID get a chance to accomplish that day! 

If you planned on laying in bed with a glass of wine all day, and thats what you did, then you were productive that day! 

Just a little reminder that being productive does not always mean writing a 6 page paper in two hours, meeting a new sales goal, or running 50 thousand errands. Being productive is simply accomplishing what you have set out to do that day! This little piece of advice is Productivity Project approved and something you should most certainly always have in mind!

Lets talk my must haves, why I have 2 very different toothbrushes, my non negotiable tongue routine (YEAH), and my receding gum line. Ew, was that last one TMI…? IDC IDC It’s important!

No One Likes Bad Breath.

First off NO ONE likes bad breath. (it was worth repeating, we can all agree)

And if we are being honest, brushing regularly is just simply not enough.

Bad breath is caused by bacteria build up in your mouth, and that bacteria is not just on your teeth, it’s on your tongue too! Brushing your tongue is definitely a good first step, but it’s definitely, also, not the most efficient way to bid bad breath goodbye!

But tongue scraping? Oh yeah, it’ll do the trick!

So, I’m not above admitting I was not the avid tongue scraper I am today before listening to The Skinny Confidential Him & Her podcast. (episode 103 go listen, you wont regret it!) But now, you absolutely will not catch me skipping this step in my routine. I mean, honestly, why this habit isn’t engrained into us from birth the way a fascination with reality TV is, I have no clue

 

Tongue scraping isn’t a fad either, guys, its a thing. Its been apart of Ayurvedic medicine for centuries!

The Ayurvedic reasoning behind this habit is spiritual as well, and if you are interested in learning more about that, this book is the perfect resource! I highly recommend! But the idea is that removing the film layer of bacteria off of your tongue reduces not only the bacteria that reside there, but also reduces the bacteria that you are swallowing throughout your day. 

P.S. Your tongue should NOT be white just like your teeth should not be yellow! 🙂

Two Toothbrushes and the 411 on my Receding Gum Line

In all seriousness I should have probably lead with this because it is so important! Receding gum lines are not uncommon and are often caused by brushing too hard and using too rough of a toothbrush. Two ways to know if you are brushing too hard are –

1 – The bristles on your toothbrush for your teeth and your toothbrush for cleaning the cracks between the tiles in your bathroom look the same. (Yikes- time to settle down tiger)

Actually … I feel the need to clarify that, that is an exaggeration. Your bristles should stand tall & proud just like the day you bought them!

2 – Sensitive teeth! Chances are if your teeth are sensitive to temperature, your gums have started to recede and more of the root of the tooth is exposed.

The bad news is receding gums are the first step toward Gum Disease. If you are like me and the two symptoms above apply to you I’m sure you are currently thinking “F U C K  N O” because that is EXACTLY what I thought!

Before the panic sets in all the way, I’d like to add,  there is SO much hope! First chunk the toothbrush – I’m willing to bet if you brush too hard you also have a medium to hard bristle brush. ALWAYS go with soft! just like your skin, your teeth don’t need to be roughed up to be cleaned.

 

Because its my hobby to make everything in my life as difficult as humanly possible, I have two toothbrushes. I guess its like my version of the whole “my food can’t touch OCD” thing? 

For regular toothpaste brushing I use my quip! I made the switch because it really really helps me chill out and brush gently. The vibrations are timed as well which I love and I get sent a new brush head every three months. I don’t know about y’all but I think I’m actually the worst about replacing my toothbrush so the subscription thing is ideal!

The second toothbrush in my arsenal is an eco friendly bamboo toothbrush by Avistar care and it is fabulous! I use this brush for my charcoal teeth whitening powder after I’ve brushed my teeth. Both of these brushes are soft bristled and very gentle, as they should be!

The Avistar toothbrushes come in a pack of like a billion, guys, and the whole quip situation is not the cheapest thing in the world, so if you are looking for an affordable oral care upgrade like now, these brushes are the way to go! The First Date trick I Wish I Had Known Years Ago

Lastly, I want to talk about this LIFE SAVING product that I am so mad at myself for not having discovered sooner. GUYS this is like reinventing the wheel level shit I’m about to lay on you & I just need you to be ready. 

INDIVIDUALLY. PACKAGED. FLOSS PICKS.

Floss picks are a thing, I get it, but these babies are –

1. Cute AF

2. Individually packaged for easy & discrete purse storage (a must)

3. Very oddly strong! (like I’m talking stronger than my tongue scrapping obsession)

Stashing these bad boys in my purse is a first date trick I wish I had known about YEARS ago! – Because we all know boys aren’t worth a damnnn when it comes to letting you know when theres something wrong on your face, much less in your teeth! *eye roll*
Like trust me, you telling me about the piece of spinach that moved in next to my left front tooth is WAY less embarrassing than getting home and finding it myself!

Morning Cacao Smoothie

This has been my absolute FAV breakfast smoothie lately! And before I even get into the recipe I just want to say, I 10000% get that it looks GROSS. But can I just take a minute to emphasize that it just LOOKS  that way?? This smoothie is my fav for a reason!! It is so tasty not to mention its packed with yummy vitamins and minerals, making it the perfect way to wake up and tell your body “I FUCKING LOVE YOU”

Cacao Breakfast Smoothie 

– 1 Frozen banana

– 1 Mejool date 

– 2 Table spoons cacao

– Big handful of spinach

– 1 1/2 Cup almond milk 

– 1 Tablespoon chia seeds 

Throw it all in a blender and enjoy!

If you're thinking - "a smoothie for breakfast wont keep me full!"

What if I told you that you could make your smoothie in a way that it would in fact keep you full!?

Heres a little way to tailor your smoothie to you! – 

Make this smoothie the way the recipe says and then make a note of what time you get hungry that day! (before lunch of course! this is not a drag it out as long as you can suggestion!) If you find that you weren’t able to make it to lunch on this recipe then add a table spoon of coconut oil to your smoothie the next morning and try again! If you still find yourself hungry before lunch, add another table spoon of chia seeds! This is adding more calories of course, and thats the point! You are adding GOOD calories that your body can make EXCELLENT use of!

 


Toasty Tuna Salad

I cant be the only one that seriously loves tuna! And tuna salad… omg don’t even get me started! Unfortunately its not the healthiest thing in the world… or even close to it for that matter… So, i took matters into my own hands and made my own PROTEIN PACKED substitute! 

It’s quick, it’s easy, it’s yummy, & it packs a punch in nutrition terms! Obviously I cant keep this jem of a recipe to myself!

Toasty Tuna Salad Recipe

– 1 whole Avocado 

– 1 can Albacore white Tuna NON GMO 

– Small handful of Cilantro 

– Two slices of toasted bread (I prefer Powerseed by Dave’s Killer Bread)

& that literally it! chop everything up, add salt and pepper to your taste, mix and pile it sky high on some toast! So easy right? 

Stop fat shaming

This is the part where you say “DAMNNN SUSANNE thats a lot of fat, are you sure this is a healthy choice?” 

Heck yeah I’m sure! Can you guess where most of the fat in this recipe comes from?

Most of the fat comes from the avocado! In other words lots of polyunsaturated fats in the form of omega 3’s, and monounsaturated fats! Avocado contains saturated fat as well but, it’s all good because saturated fats or omega 6’s (it’s less hated name) are used by your body in a 1:1 ratio!

And boy are fats used by the body, we need them for just about every bodily function you can think of! So, stop fat shaming, try this recipe, and don’t forget to tell me what you think!

Toiletry Must Haves

Toiletries are such a necessity and I cannot believe they aren’t talked about more often! Like let’s be honest, we are all SO picky about our make up, our clothes, our food… but when it comes to toothpaste and tampons we just grab one off the shelf?? UH no. 

Of course we all have our favorite things, but how much do we know about whats in them? And do we really even care? You might not now, but give me 5 minutes of your time and I’ll tell you why you should!

Deodorant - a must!

First off, lets talk deodorant! The first time I tried natural deodorant, I was not convinced – It’s more expensive, it doesn’t work, it’s just a giant pain, really. So I chose to ignore what I had been told about how terrible traditional deodorant was for you and moved on with my life.

But the facts kept following me around and it was eating me up that I was knowingly not taking care of my body!

PAUSE- If you don’t know what the big deal about traditional deodorant is, let me fill you in! 

Traditional Deodorant contains Aluminum and Parabens which have been linked to cancer and diseases like alzheimer’s. I totally get that you aren’t eating your deodorant but toxins are absorbed through the skin as well!   

 

So, anyway, I set out to find a natural aluminum free deodorant that would actually work! What I found was NATIVE, and I am completely hooked!! This stuff is so great guys! They even sent me two travel sizes for free with my order and they’ve been tiny life savers because, lets be real, my mornings only look calm and collected on snapchat. I forget even the most important things constantly, ya feel!?

Obviously, we have to talk tampons!

Your vagina is your friend y’all and I know that once a month it sure as hell feels like you aren’t friends… but shut up, yes you are. Remember, your skin ABSORBS and your lady parts are a whole lot more absorptive than your arm pits so like HELLO pay attention! 

An old coworker of mine used to make fun of me and joke that I probably use organic tampons, and this got me thinking… like wait is that a thing? I had never even considered what was in a tampon or if it was good or bad, I mean its not like the options are just endless in that department… its kinda just the thing you use and thats it, right? 

The alternative is well, not for everyone, but that shouldn’t mean I’m doomed to make my baby maker a toxin absorption center!

Luckily for us ladies, the girls at LOLA have figured this shit out! Their tampons are 100% organic cotton & thats it! I wish I could tell you about all the bad stuff in other tampons, but the thing is they are not required to disclose that information… so obviously the don’t. IDK ABOUT YALL- but thats just a little terrifying.

As if all of this wasn’t enough, LOLA also delivers monthly. I mean guys, it just doesn’t get any better than this.

Next order of business are those pearly whites! - Toothpaste

Two things – whitening & brushing. 

Brushing your teeth is just a thing you do mmkay? and then whitening is something extra you do because who doesn’t want a dazzling white smile?? 

I use Thieves Dentarome Ultra toothpaste and I love it! I love the taste, and it certainly has made my teeth whiter.

Now, the debate on fluoride goes on and on, but I won’t get into all of that. I really am just into the idea of using a more natural product and this all natural essential oil toothpaste does the trick for me! 

Whitening!

Even though the Thieves toothpaste whitened my teeth I wanted more!! Baking soda definitely works but it’s way gross, and I just wasn’t about it. Whitening strips or treatments at the dentist were also a no go because they make my teeth so extremely sensitive. So, I tried Avistar Care Natural Charcoal Whitener & Detoxifier, and was SOLD. Their charcoal is infused with coconut, and really truly works! I wish I had before and after pictures for you guys but I mean lets be honest… that would mean I had my life together… and I very obviously do not!

I used my charcoal after I brushed in the morning or night or both for about two weeks, now I just add it into my morning about once a week and everything is perfectly up-kept! The results aren’t as fast as strips or the dentist but for teeth that aren’t sensitive, like, there is not even a question in my mind which I prefer!

DIY Aloe & Lavender Breakout Be GONE Face Mask

This DIY face mask recipe is one that every girl (or guy) needs up their sleeve! It’s totally a life saver. I mean not that there’s ever a good time for a zit, but sometime it’s just REALLY not a good time…

Another thing that I love about this mask is that the mess is extremely minimal. This baby is thin, goes on easily, rinses off easily and just gets the job DONE.

I could literally write whole post about how awesome aloe vera is (& I probably will) but right now the most important thing to know is that aloe contains two hormones that specifically target acne! Auxin & Gibberellins both have strong antioxidant properties that reduce skin inflammation. Gibberellins also stimulates new cell growth so your skin can heal quickly and seamlessly!

Lavender has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties that make it great for treating acne! Lavender is nourishing and soothing to your skin, it will decrease scarring and the appearance of dark spots. 

Also, know for its ability to relieve anxiety and stress, lavender will continue serving you and your skin past its topical benefits!

Lemon’s acidity can act as an antiseptic and kills bacteria. It also reduces redness and lightens the skin which makes it great at reducing any past acne scars you many have!

 Lemon does strips the skin of oils so be sure to follow this mask with toner and moisturize!

I am LOVING Shea Moisture’s Peace Rose Oil face moisturizer and Andalou naturals blossom toner

The recipe!

  • half a lemon
  • 1/4 cup aloe vera
  • 5 drops lavender essential oil 

Blend and apply to a clean face! 

Rinse off after 10 -15 minutes. Follow with toner and moisturize!

Hope you all enjoy this mask as much as I do! This recipe makes quite a bit so I always force literally everyone around me to participate. You could also store it in the fridge in a small mason jar or I mean you could  always make it a total body thing because why not! You totally deserve it!

The SO important thing I’ve been doing SO wrong!

Here are two weird bathroom stories that I would like to grace yall with. (and if you didn’t think we were close enough for that- we just got close enough)

I moved to the United States officially when I was like 7-ish. So, this is the second grade, just for context so you get a picture of how strange this was for me.

Because, in second grade, you aren’t like new to the whole school thing, but you’re new enough.

Anyway, for like weeks I had listened to my peers ask to go to the Restroom, and each time they were permitted to do so – like “ya no problem!” All whilst little Suzy is left to wonder what in the world a Rest-room was doing in this educational setting…

I’m not going to pretend like I EVER did well on a spelling test, but c’mon guys… our curriculum is by no means rigorous enough to need a REST-ROOM. (Hopefully, you can see my confusion)

So, one day I mustered up my courage and asked permission to go to the prestigious restroom –

I’m sure you can guess where this is going…

If you guessed soul-crushing disappointment you are right, my friend. Little Suzy was expecting a lounge chair, a couch, a Poole table, refreshments… and she was let down. HARD.

Oh and just a side note- no, I did not spend my first few weeks of second grade not using the bathroom, I’m just a normal person and I call it a Bathroom.

Now for the relevant story

I’ve always considered myself pretty healthy as far as diet and habits go. Of course, just like everyone else I, too, have fallen off the wagon a time or two.

Then the other day I realized I’ve been doing, like, the ONE most important thing completely wrong…

It actually kills me to admit this, but I have been seriously depriving myself of water!

Omg, that’s like nails on a chalkboard to me!! Like, how was I doing that to myself???

I came to this realization after being a total creep and noticing that EVERYONE in my office building went to the bathroom like 3X the amount I had to go.

*Cue obsessive research on how much water a person should drink a day*

So, How much water should you have?

Some sites said 1 – 1/2 ounce per pound body weight and some said your typical 8 glasses a day. I think both of these are probably good rules to go by, but having a water goal, in general, to meet by the end of the day is really what has helped me the most!

Figure out how much water you should drink a day and get to work!! & if you want to be a psycho like me, get yourself a Hydroflask and set alarms for the times you should be due for a refill!

JUST BE AWARE GUYS! Because seriously I feel so much better than I ever have!

It’s so easy to get lost in your day and all the “important” things you’re doing, but in the end, what’s really important is taking care of yourself!!

The 411 on Chocolate Cravings!

The 411 on your chocolate cravings

There are actually a few reasons you could be craving a big hunk of chocolate beside the fact that it is DELICIOUS!

The first and most obvious of course being that sugar is addicting.

Like actually, I’m not kidding.

Sugar triggers the same pleasure centers in the brain that are also affected by many drugs.

This is the same reason that putting yourself on that new sugar-free diet is often accompanied by a few days of sugar withdraw; headaches, lethargy etc.

But what if I told you that craving chocolate could not only be your body trying to tell you something but also be good for you?!

 

Dark chocolate- the superfood!

Dark chocolate, 60% and higher that is, has some badass qualities! I’m sure you’ve heard that it’s full of antioxidants and honestly, that’s reason enough for ya girl over here to not think twice about giving in to my cravings! Yet, there are even more reasons that, on your quest to remove sugar from your diet, you might oughta just let dark chocolate stay!

For starters, a chocolate craving might be your body telling you that you are running low on magnesium! Magnesium is needed for a whole boatload of body processes and dark chocolate is a good source of it. Low levels of this micronutrient can lead to low energy, sleep problems, anxiety or depression and hormone problems.

But it doesn’t stop there! Dark chocolate is also a good source of, Manganese (anti-inflammatory), Copper (immune and nerve health), and Zinc (growth and development)!

Dark chocolate and your skin!

Let’s talk Flavanols! Flava- what?? This must obviously be some fancy reason why chocolate is so damn good, right?

Wrong!

Flavanol is the particular type of antioxidant that is found in high quantities in dark chocolate. Because of their free radical fighting properties antioxidants and the foods that contain them are good for your cell health! Protection, regeneration, etc. All the good stuff! Eating Flavanol-rich cocoa can lead to smoother more hydrated skin due to the antioxidant’s ability to protect cells from harmful UV rays.7_0003_mailbox

Chocoholic Disclaimer!

Okay, Okay, maybe I shouldn’t have written this post at all… because let’s be real, another excuse to eat chocolate is the last thing any of us need… However, a reason to swap sugary, processed milk chocolate for dark chocolate is something your body will thank you for!

Just to be clear, though, milk chocolate does not have all these awesome benefits and will do nothing for you but fuel your sugar addiction! (ouch, maybe that was too harsh?)

And, of course, remember all in moderation! Dark chocolate still has its fair share of sugar, so don’t get carried away!

P.S. Justin’s Hazelnut butter is not technically dark chocolate over 60% but its seriously the best and with considerably less sugar than the other guys, I have to make room to rave about it! Bark thins are actually to die for, and Theo is possibly the love of my life? Pretty sure the feeling is mutual.

3 Minute Kale Greek Salad!I think we can probably all agree that eating healthy is not convenient, but like it must be done!

So what are you to do when there’s 15 minutes left before you have to leave for work and you have done absolutely nothing in the way of preparing lunch/dinner for yourself. Plus your hair isn’t brushed and you aren’t even wearing pants.

Do you..

A) Crawl into bed and give up on today, it hasn’t started out well anyway.

B) Just eat out again, it’s not the new year yet so are new habits really necessary?

C) Sing in the mirror for 16 minutes and be late to life.. again.

D) 3 minute kale salad you saw on that blog that one time. BONUS- you have time for pants and a hairbrush!

No matter what you picked, I’m going to go ahead and share this must have recipe with you because its literally been my lifesaver lately!

 

3 Minute Kale Greek Salad!

  • 2 cups chopped kale
  • 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup feta cheese
  • 1 cup chopped english cucumbers
  • 1/2 cup red onions (optional)
  • greek dressing (if you want to be alittle extra you can substitute this with oil & vinegar and a sprinkle of rosemary!)

Mix it all up and enjoy!

For anyone that is still scared of fat, STOP! look at that beautiful specimen of a nutrition label, that Fat and Fiber combo means this baby will keep you full! The kale is really the superstar here, but the fat content really helps it to be a satisfying meal. If you are Vegan and choose to pass on the feta I really recommend adding some sunflower seeds instead to keep this salad filling and well rounded!
